TEDxFlourCity2015: Branch Out - A Recap!
To all of our guests, speakers, performers, partners and the staff at the Eastman school of music, thanks for helping us make TEDxFlourCity2015: Branch Out, a success! Over 350 Rochesterians filled Kilbourn Hall on Saturday May 30th for TEDxFlourCity2015 and came ready to Branch Out. Read on to find out how our Branch Out theme made this year’s conference our most important event yet.
This year’s main event was all about collaboration before, during and after the event. From first impressions to final bow to future plans, teamwork was happening at every step.
Thank you to local photography group @ExploreRochester (on instagram) for providing the cover image for our program!
Our theme challenged you to push out of your comfort zones and connect with others in an intentional way. Participation was key—we wouldn’t have been able to pull it off without you.
Of course, our TEDxFlourCity audience is awesome and made it happen. We asked you to create your name tags and tell us about yourselves.
TEDxFlourCIty2015 speakers Callie Babbit and Gabrielle Javier-Cerulli "cheesing," and sporting their name tags. The fine print: unusual skills they would like to learn. Callie said "How to sketch" and Gabrielle said: "Being able to fly"
You told us you wanted to learn how to ride a unicycle, juggle and do Parkour. So we brought in a unicyclist-juggler...

...And a Parkour expert

Throughout the day you explored our labs and engaged in various extremes of branching out and putting yourselves out there. You played truth or dare with the Rochester Brainery at our “Out on a Limb” lab.
You put your thoughts, ideas and inspiration out there by placing them on our Idea Tree.

You left pieces of your experience in notes for others to find at our Olive Branch lab.
Participants exploring written expression, capturing inspiration, recording memories and bringing their messages to life with creative stationary and writing tools, including a typewriter.
Our partners helped to make sure we were fueled and fed.
Guests greeted by our own pop up cafe. Rather than typical conference DIY coffee, participants watched their coffee being hand brewed as artisan baristas from Fuego Coffee Roasters, Pour Coffee Parlour and Joe Bean Coffee Roasters displayed their craft and created a coffee house feel. From L to R: Virginia McDonald of Fuego, John Cannon of Pour and Ben Turiano of Joe Bean
At the TEDxFlourCity2015 Cafe, participants were full of life --and caffeine

Even the weather collaborated.

But the most exciting thing about this year’s TEDxFlourCity event is that it marks the beginning of a new year of growth for our team and the TEDxFlourCity community. At our “Turn Over a New Leaf” lab you planted the seeds of ideas for your goals and joined communities of those with similar intentions as you by signing up in front of the "idea seed" of your choice.

Flags labeled with goals in mini-pots planted with idea seeds, and lists of team members pledging to make each idea grow
Throughout the year we will be facilitating collaboration of these TEDxFlourCity groups and highlighting your progress as your seeds of ideas for growth become focused and gain momentum. We know your enthusiasm and passion from TEDxFlourCity2015 are magic ingredients in successfully bringing your ideas to life.
Thank you all again so much for showing up, branching out and making this event your own.
